I attended a Chinese New Year function here and was not disappointed! The proprietors and their staff catered with flair for Ballarat's Chinese community and their guests. I have not banquetted on such varied and well prepared Chinese food in a very long time. That Ballarat's Chinese community chose the Nerrina as their venue to see in the 'Year of the Horse', testifies to the quality of the Chinese food on offer here!At this point in time, their wine list is not quite as refined as their wonderful food offerings; but then, this is very much a "local" and semi-rural pub. There are no pretentions towards being anything more than exactly that.Interestingly, Nerrina and neighbouring Little Bendigo, were the centre of the market gardens, created by Ballarat's longstanding Chinese community, resident since the goldrushes of the 1850s and 60s. It thus seems most appropriate, that its newest proprietors, a lovely Chinese couple, have established their venture into the hotel scene, within what is the established heart of Ballarat's Chinese heritage ! I have eaten at the Nerrina, subsequently with smaller groups and have enjoyed quality fare.Though once having the reputation as being a rough and tough venue, The Nerrina Bar and Restaurant has more recently transformed into a venue that is safe and welcoming, even if the decor has seen way better days. The food and friendly service make up for any shortcomings on the ambience front! What's more they serve traditional pub fare and authentic Chinese dishes that are simply divine at exceptionally affordable prices!
