Stopped in over Easter, and again last weekend for a coffee only to find the place closed. Food and beverages are a little on the pricey side, but it's a clean cafe
I travel along the Hume quite a bit and had never stopped in at Barney's, or even Bookham. Finally, was driving past at about lunchtime, so dropped in. First impressions were mixed. Out front is a very pleasant and spotlessly clean tiled patio, featuring comfy seating options and a wood-burning heater that must be great in winter. And in the middle of the patio was a beautiful parrot in a cage, which is really what grabbed our attention. Not sure if it is a native or exotic species, but we are not fans of seeing any birds in cages. I guess there may be back story and maybe the bird had a broken wing and can't fly - but (for us at least) it was not a good start. Inside was a bit mixed, too. The space is clean, nicely decorated and with some excellent background music (including Hendrix). The menu offered a good range of standard roadside-diner meals - fresh sandwiches, wraps, toasties, burgers, salads - and at reasonable prices. Kids' meals at good prices, too. A few things on the menu had been scratched out. We settled on toasties, and they were fine. On the downside, thought the chap behind the counter might have got out of bed on the wrong side that morning. No greeting and grumpy demeanor. Worse still was my coffee (flat white) - weak and insipid. The worst I'd had in five days on the road. In no rush to return.
