Food didn't taste bad but just wasn't my type of thing. Too strong in the spices for me. Service was not bad. However, the ambience can be improved.

I like to think I know a thing or two about veg eating out. Having been to all vegan cafes and restaurants in Brisbane to date. This, is hands down, the best. Generally I have found vegan and vegetarian to be predominantly Asian cuisine, so this was a great change of vibe. The menu is very extensive, including many cuisines (pastas, noodles, cakes, many mock meat dishes) and large portions. Customer service has always been sufficient and the price is extremely reasonable. It's not particularly fancy or well decorated, but it doesn't need to be, the food is always amazing and I recommend this to omni's vegos and vegans. I love that there is a grocery section. My favourites on the menu are the 'pork' bbq buns, the lasange, the cabonara and the 'chicken' nuggets.

Cav Rd Canteen opening plan
Cav Rd Canteen

Carindale, 47 Cavendish Road, Coorparoo, Brisbane

Fast Food, italian

Popped my head into Cav Rd Canteen after spying a sign for fresh cold-press juices and iced coffees.

Decided to pass on both as they were quite expensive at $6.50 - I rarely pay that much for an Iced Latte at a coffee house, let alone a canteen.

Still wanted to give them a try, hoping to find a hidden gem in Coorparoo, so went with the Fried Chicken and Chips lunch deal that included a Coke for $10. Paid an extra $2 ($12 in total) to upgrade from Chicken Wings to Chicken Breast.

Neither the chicken nor the chips were remarkable...actually, they were both short of average - 2.5.

It was also quite hot inside (no air conditioning and they didn't turn the fans on until after I ordered) with limited counter seating and two small tables on the footpath.

After I ordered and was waiting for my takeaway, I noticed some additional specials taped to a side wall - all Vietnamese dishes, including Rice Paper Rolls, Bahn Mi, Noodle Soups, etc. I got talking to the owner and he told me those were the dishes he was proud of, being from Vietnam. It sounded like he may have inherited the main menu (burgers, fried fish/chicken, chips, etc) when he bought the shop 5 years ago, but that he has added Vietnamese dishes more recently.

I'll admit that the longer I waited in the heat, looking at the pre-prepared sausage rolls and pies under the heat lamps, the more I started to worry about food safety. I felt much better after I saw the 4 star rating from Brisbane's Eat Safe program as I was leaving.

Their prices are a bit steep, especially the fresh juices and iced coffees, and the menu is all over the place, but if you are in search of some Vietnamese comfort food you might want to give them a try for yourself. Personally, I don't think I'll be back.
